Born in western Sydney, Julie’s early interest in art was fostered by her mother. She was constantly drawing on anything and everything with charcoal, pencil and cheap poster paint. Her first painting was exhibited when she was twelve, a pastel landscape, in a local western suburbs shopping centre show.

Her love of the visual arts was further encouraged in secondary school and every year she would attend the open day at East Sydney tech, the mecca for aspiring would be artists. Alas, reality struck when Julie had to get a real job! Fortunately that job was in an art studio in Sydney where she was taught all the basics of good drawing and the application of fresh and free washes. Julie worked in the studio for six years and in that time would produce work ranging from food to perfume to furniture. After leaving she continued to freelance for a number of years whilst raising her family.

During this period she became enamoured with pottery and completed two diplomas at Penrith Tafe. Julie continued on this path for the next sixteen years, working from her studio at Castlereagh and building and firing a woodfired kiln.

In 2004, Julie revitalised her passion for drawing and painting with a week-long workshop at the Mitchell winter art school. Although Julie has no formal art qualifications, she has won an impressive string of awards and now paints full- time.

Julie paints in oils, pastels and mixed media but it is the medium of watercolour that excites her the most. She also paints plein air on a weekly basis as well as on numerous week long painting trips each year. This painting outdoors is a crucial aspect of her work as it makes her concentrate on shape and tone and consequently the subject is simplified with detail being kept to a minimum.

Julie is an associate member of the Royal Art Society.
