Specialising in Landscape Abstraction and Figurative Art Paul Williams is deeply impressed with the endless spaces and timelessness found in great deserts. He embarks on regular visits to South and Central Australia, seeking the artistic promise of their colours and light. His love of deserts and arid zones has taken him to the Altiplano lands of Peru and Bolivia, the Atacama in Chile, the homeland of his partner, and more recently to Utah, Nevada and Colorado. Having progressed over the years from realism to abstraction, Paul will “paint his feelings”, rather than just copy the scenery. For him, the subject is secondary to the pictorial elements of the work. Proceeding intuitively, he is guided by a wellspring of past observations and his imagination. It seems ironic that the two art movements which most interest him, rock art and Abstract Expressionism, are at the extreme ends of the human epoch and yet they share many similarities. Living on the coast, Paul is also emotionally connected to the sea and its rock pools, beaches and headlands. Aside from the landscape, the artist has a strong interest in the human figure. In response to the model’s pose, he likes to work fast and intuitively, trying to create an image balanced between the real and the abstract.
