Gerald Christmas’ painting career began at the time of his retirement in 1998 fro legal practice, when his wife Rosemary joined a painting trip with a group of artists in the Kakadu country. He immediately took up painting with enthusiasm. He did various art courses and travelled with art groups into the Kimberleys and in subsequent years many times to Alice Springs and Queensland. When not travelling outback he enjoys nothing better than the places and sights of Mosman, Balmoral, Manly and the foreshores of Sydney Harbour, where he paints regularly.
In the past four years, Gerald’s art work has taken on a new turn. He has focused less on traditional landscape and more on the naive style figurative work featuring the habits and foibles of the life and culture of Balmoral and Mosman.
His work endeavours to entertain and amuse and also provoke thought. The style adopts bright and contrasting colours, bold, imaginative and geometric patterns, shapes, lines and quaint, often distorted figures.
Well known artist, Ruth Faerber, who opened his first solo exhibition entitled “Balmorality Revealed” in November 2013 at Artarmon Galleries, has said of his work, “Gerald brings to the antics of the human race a delightful mixture of wry humour, tinged with a sharp observing eye.”
In the following year Gerald’s second solo exhibition which was held in the Gallery of the Balmoral Bathers Pavilion from early November 2014 to early January 2015
Gerald continues to exhibit in various group exhibitions as well as the regular exhibitions arranged by the Mosman Art Society. He has been President of the Mosman Art Society Inc. for the past ten years until his retirement from that position in December 2015.
